PIAA District III AA Boys XC Championship Preview

October 20, 2018

Team Race

The top three teams and top 15 individuals not on one of those top 3 teams will qualify for the PIAA State Championships in Hershey on November 3.

Whereas the AA girls was one of the easier races to project a winner, the AA boys championship could be the most difficult. Wyomissing has been our #1 ranked team throughout the season. York Suburban had been #2 and Boiling Springs had been #3. York Suburban and Boiling Springs competed against each other on Sept 15th at the Ben Bloser Invitational (Big Spring). York Suburban won the AA competition scoring just 53 points. Boiling Springs finished as runner-up with 84 points. They significantly outpaced Big Spring who finished 3rd with 167 points. Wyomissing most recently finished 2nd at the Berks County championships and were the only team to give AAA power Twin Valley a scare. Next Saturday will be the first time we see all three squads toe the line at the same meet.

Susquehannock, Milton Hershey, Kennard-Dale, and Big Spring will also be looking to challenge for a top 5 finish. If someone ahead of them falters, they could sneak into the 3rd place state berth.

Race Projection:

District III AA Champion – York Suburban

Note: While Wyomissing will likely be the first team to have 4 runners cross the finish line, York Suburban will be able to keep it close with their first 4. They have better team depth in their #5-7 runners. This will prove to be the difference on Saturday.

District III AA Runner-up – Wyomissing

3rd Place – Boiling Springs

4th Place – Big Spring

5th Place – Susquehannock

Individual Race

Lancaster Mennonite sr Logan Horst and Wyomissing junior Ben Kuhn have the fastest 5k times in AA this year. They have also been two of the most consistently good runners in the area. Horst won at the Big Spring course back in September at the Ben Bloser Invitational. He ran his season and personal best time at that invite, running 16:19. He most recently finished 5th at the LL League Championships (first AA finisher) in 16:27. Kuhn is coming off a Berks County Championship where he ran his season best time of 16:21. He has a personal best time of 16:04 from the 2017 Lehigh University Paul Short Run.

Northern Lebanon junior Gage Krall finished 8th at the LL League Championship in a PR of 16:41. He also has a 5th place finish from the Gettysburg Invitational in a time of 16:53. York Suburban’s Jarrett Raudensky (sr) finished 3rd at the YAIAA Championships in 16:49 (SB) and was the top AA finisher. He has a PR of 16:07 from last year’s Carlisle Invitational. He finished 10th in the state as a junior last Fall. Look for him to be in the lead group at Districts.

Two of the areas top freshman will be competing in this race. Weber Long from Greencastle-Antrim started the season off very strong, running 16:40 at PTXC10. He most recently finished 31st at Mid-Penn with the 4th fastest AA time of 17:17. Cole Adams of York Suburban finished 3rd at Ben Bloser in 17:02. He finished one spot ahead of Long who ran 17:03. Adams has a PR of 17:00 when he finished 8th at the YAIAA Championships.
