The lists below show our projected team qualifiers and projected finishes for the District 3 Championships.
Girls – This should be one of the most competitive district championship fields in the state. 5 teams will advance to states from this grouping. I think 9 teams still have a realistic shot at earning of those spots. Several of the top teams on this list are dealing with injuries which could significantly hamper their chances. With nearly 3 weeks until districts we’ll hope everyone gets healthy!
Boys – Hempfield has been our #1 ranked team in class AAA all season. They seem to be getting stronger as the season progresses and could place 3 runners inside the top 10 at districts. The real battle comes in the race for one of the 3 other state qualifying berths. Whereas the girls get 5 team qualifiers, the boys receive 4.
Girls – 3 teams will advance to states in class AAA and I still see Berks County teams sweeping the state qualifying berths. Boiling Springs or Trinity could break up the sweep.
Boys – Lampeter Strasburg is the heavy favorite in class AA. They’ll battle for a podium spot at the state meet in November. Greencastle-Antrim and Susquehannock have remained firmly in state qualifying position from early in the year. These 3 are good bets to move onto the state meet. Special call-out to Annville-Cleona. They are one of the smallest class AA schools in the state and they will be very competitive in this field. Their girls team is still class A.
I don’t have a lot of knowledge of the independent private schools competing in Class A. It is possible that one of them surprises come Districts. One team to keep an eye on is Anchor Christian (on the boys side). They had a solid 4 last season. 2 teams will advance to states from both the girls and boys races.
The girls race will go through Annville-Cleona. They have the best depth and the individual favorite in Braetan Peters (sr). They also have another top 5 runner in Cassi Clemson (jr). Tulpehocken has 5 runners, but two have been out since the second week of the season. If all 5 are healthy, then they could challenge for the team title. Tulpy freshman Abby Gehris could push Peters for the individual title.
The boys team race should be incredibly close. The top 4 teams are all very much alive for the team title. I think League/county/conference meet week will help to clear some things up before the district meet.
