Historic 1600m runs at the 2022 PIAA State Championships

We witnessed history in both the boys’ and girls’ class AAA 1600m runs at this year’s state championship meet.

Boys:

1) Gary Martin (sr, Archbishop Wood) broke the previous PIAA State Meet Record clocking a time of 4:01.56. He was on sub-4min pace through 1200m. 2) 19 boys ran sub-4:20 (see results below)! In reviewing the PAMilesplit database, this is the most ever under 4:20 in a state championship meet. 3) A time of 4:15 is better than multiple state champions of the past. Today, that placed 10th. It took a 4:14.51 just to medal. 4) The top 8 athletes all ran NFHS Honor Roll times. 5) Cole Stevens ran the fastest freshman 1600m time in Pennsylvania history with his 4:13.94. That time broke Craig Miller’s (Manheim Township) time of 4:14.26 from 2003.

Congratulations to all of the athletes, especially the 4 boys from District 3 who won state medals and all ran new PRs! TJ Roden (jr, Central Dauphin)- 3rd in 4:11.58; Aidan Hodge (jr, Hempfield) – 5th in 4:13.15; Cole Stevens (fr, Manheim Township) – 6th in 4:13.94; Jacob Smith (sr, Warwick) 8th in 4:14.51!

Girls:

1) 13 girls broke 5:00 (see results below)! In reviewing the PAMilesplit database, this is the most ever under 5:00 in a state championship meet! 2) It took a time of 4:57.18 just to medal! 3) Olivia Walter (sr, Mechanicsburg) ran 4:59.03 for 11th. That time would have placed 4th last year and 5th in 2019.

Congratulations to all of the athletes, especially the 3 ladies from District 3 who won state medals and PR’d! Claire Paci (so, Greencastle-Antrim) – 2nd in 4:54.77; Kylee Cubbison (sr, Mifflin County) – 6th in 4:57.05; Caryn Rippey (sr, Wilson) – 7th in 4:57.13
