Summary of the 2020 PIAA District VI XC Championships

State College boys and girls win it again.

Central Cambria sweeps x2 – Boys go 1-5 AND Boys and Girls win team titles.

The top collection of AA girl’s teams in the state battled it out in a close one.

Penns Valley boys, without Brendan Colwell, still dominate.


Class AAA

Boys:

District 4 merges with District 6 this season and the addition of Williamsport made for a more competitive meet. The final result did not change, however. State College takes home another District 6 team title and earns the team berth for states. Brady Bigger (sr) led the Little Lions and looks ready to compete for a top finish at next weekend’s state championship meet. He defended his 2019 title, winning in 2020 with an impressive 15:37 run. This was 22-seconds faster than he ran last year. Brayden Harris (sr, Mifflin County) and J. Henry Lyon (sr, Williamsport) both also ran sub-16, going 15:51 and 15:58, respectively, to place 2nd and 3rd.

Girls:

The State College girls were dominate in this one. They score only 18 points in taking home the District VI title, placing 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th. Jordan Reed (sr) and Marlee Kwasnica (so) continue to show they are one of the top 1-2 duos in the state with Reed winning in 18:34 and Kwasnica placing 2nd in 18:50. Look for State College to battle for a top 3 team finish on Saturday at Hershey. Mifflin County’s Kylee Cubbison (jr) was 3rd, running 19:05.

Boys:

Wow! Central Cambria with a statement victory. They take the top 5 individual spots to secure the perfect score of 15! Their next 2 runners placed 7th and 11th. They will likely battle Lewisburg and Kennard-Dale for the team title next weekend. Toby Cree (sr) led the way taking home the victory in 16:18.

Girls:

The most competitive classification in District 6 in girls AA. The top 3 teams may be top 5 in the state. Central Cambria takes home the team title and the one coveted state qualifying spot, scoring 39 points. Forest Hills finishes 2nd with 46 points and Westmont Hilltop 3rd with 53 points. Ellie Dorian (sr, Westmont Hilltop) takes home the individual title, running 19:30.

Class A

Boys:

There are 13 class A teams in District 6, but even without state runner-up Brendan Colwell, the Penns Valley boys dominate the field scoring just 21 points. Had Colwell been healthy, Penns Valley would have scored a perfect 15 points. State Champion Colton Sands had some injuries earlier in the year, but looked strong in taking the individual title in 15:55. He won by 43-seconds over teammate Thaddaeus Smith (sr) who ran 16:38.

Girls:

Penns Valley will be sending both teams to states as the girls win a close one over Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy, 47 to 53. Lauren Shaffer (jr, Portage) wins her 2nd District title in a row, running 18:56! The 400m runner during track season has gotten better each year at XC. As a freshman she placed 2nd at the district meet, running 20:12. She won districts as a sophomore in 19:11. This year she improved 15 more seconds to dip under the 19-minute mark. Kelsey Hull (sr, Penns Valley), Kathleen Simander (sr, St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy), and Anna Stitzer (jr, Penns Valley) go 2-4 and all go sub-20 minutes.
