Hello everyone! My name is Katie Dallas and this year I’ll be a senior at Wilson High School. Even though I’m an avid runner now, I didn’t quite fall in love with running until I started high school. In middle school, you could find me running the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay- yes, I was a sprinter. In 8th grade, my coach asked me to run the 400m and although I was reluctant at first, I soon became a solely 400m runner.
Heading into high school, I wasn’t finding much success in the 400m, but my running career changed when I decided to join cross country. Hesitantly, I began trekking through 12 mile long runs and predator workouts. By the beginning of my junior year track season, I had fallen in love with mid-distance speed endurance; In races like the 1600m or 800m, you have to run smart, but by the end of the race, it’s all about who wants it more.
Next year I would love to run a couple more 1600m and 3200m, but my main focus is the 800m (my favorite event). I’m really looking forward to the cross country season and getting in some good competition! Although I love trail workouts, my favorite workout is 400m repeats on the track- It’s always a nice little throwback to my sprinting days! Over the course of my running journey I’ve learned a lot in both the mental and physical aspects of the sport and would love to share my experiences. I’m also looking forward to running in college and some of the schools I’m interested in include Penn State, Pitt, Northwestern, Columbia, Cornell, Georgetown, UNC, and Boston College (I have a much longer list but if I included them all, this article would be 10 pages long!). I’m planning on majoring in mathematics or architecture and I’m really excited to start visiting college campuses this summer!
