Spotlight 2022 – Matthew Nawn, Hanover High School

Matthew E. Nawn

Hanover Senior High School

In college, I plan to major in electrical engineering and earn my minor in Naval Science through Navy ROTC.

After college, I plan to make a career as an officer in the U.S. Navy.

My favorite high school subject was AP Physics.

My favorite teacher at Hanover is our former track coach and my AP Physics teacher, Mr. Wyrick.

In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick is my favorite book.

Rocky is my favorite movie.

My favorite quote is from Pope St. John Paul II: “Do not be afraid.  Do not be satisfied with mediocrity.  Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch….  I plead with you–never, ever give up on hope, never doubt, never tire, and never become discouraged. Be not afraid.”

When I am not running I enjoy golfing and traveling to the beach.

Most people do not know that I played golf all four years of high school and qualified for the YAIAA County tournament twice. However, I only ran cross country senior year. I am the only male to have ever run cross country at Hanover, though.

I prefer to run in Brooks. My first pair of training shoes and spikes were Brooks. I see no reason to change to another brand of shoes given the success I have had while wearing these shoes.

The Shippensburg Invite is my favorite invitational as I run the steeplechase there. It is an electric event and my favorite race of the year.

Running between shots while practicing for a golf match in order to do a cross country workout is my favorite high school running memory.

I would tell younger runners to give everything you have and know you could have pushed harder. SIlence the mental voices that tell you to quit and just run.

Above all, enjoy the struggle of running.
